PLYMOUTH – St. Norbert College survived a Halloween scare from its rival Lakeland University with a 3-1 win in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Green Knights (17-12, 10-1 NACC) kept their share of first place by holding off the Muskies 22-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-21.
St. Norbert held leads 20-18 and 21-19 in Set 1 before the Muskies rattled off five straight points to take a 24-21 lead. The Green Knights got a side out before Lakeland responded in kind to take a 1-0 lead.
The second set started with a 4-4 tie before the Green Knights went on a 10-4 run to take a 16-10 lead. Lakeland stopped the streak with a point, but St. Norbert fashioned a quick 6-0 run behind a pair of
Andrianna Volz service aces en route to a 22-11 lead and an eventual 1-1 tie.
The Green Knights kept the momentum rolling to start Set 3, starting with a 5-1 lead. St. Norbert eventually led 19-9 before Lakeland mounted a furious rally to get within 22-19 and 23-20, but would get no closer as a
Lauren Borchardt kill and a Muskies' error led to a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was hotly contested throughout, with Lakeland taking a 17-14 lead. St. Norbert fashioned a 4-0 run behind kills from
Alli Clark,
Alyssa Mills and
Heidi Colburn. Lakeland posted a side out to tie it 18-18, but the Green Knights came again with a 6-0 run to take a 24-18 lead with a pair of
Mari Szews kills and two Clark service aces. Lakeland cut it to 24-21 before Szews' kill ended the match.
St. Norbert hit .159 in the match, with 52 kills against 25 errors in 170 attempts. Mills head a team-high 12 kills, while Szews added 10.
Heidi Colburn totaled 40 assists. Volz had three aces and Clark two.
Kara Sowinski had 18 digs, with Volz getting 15. Borchardt, Mills and Colburn all had 10 digs apiece. Clark had four blocks, Colburn three and Szews two.
Lakeland hit .037, with 37 kills against 31 errors in 161 swings. Susana Stevens had 13 kills.
