CHICAGO - St. Norbert College split a pair of matches but won the one it needed to, gaining a 3-2 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win over Illinois Institute of Technology before falling 3-1 to nationally ranked University of Chicago at Keating Sports Center.
The Green Knights (13-12, 7-1 NACC) reverse swept Illinois Tech to win 19-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-16, 15-6 before falling to No. 19-ranked Chicago 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22.
The match against Illinois Tech featured 26 ties and seven lead changes, but none in the final two sets. Trailing 1-0, the Green Knights held a 20-16 lead in Set 2 before a 7-2 run gave the Scarlet Hawks a 23-22 lead. The Green Knights scored the next point but Illinois Tech got the next two to take a 2-0 lead. St. Norbert had to hold on for dear life in Set 3, with five ties after 18-18 and beyond. The Green Knights would score the next point after a tie all five times, finally winning the deuce set on kills by
Alyssa Mills and
Mari Szews after a 25-25 knot.
St. Norbert never trailed in Set 4, pulling away from a 13-11 lead with a 5-0 run behind a pair of Szews kills. In the decisive Set 5, St. Norbert led 8-4 before going on a 5-1 run to take an insurmountable 13-5 edge.
The Green Knights hit .198, getting 59 kills with 24 assists in 177 attempts. Mills had 13 kills,
Alli Clark 11 kills and Szews 10 terminationas.
Heidi Colburn had 31 assists, while
Keira Ashenfelter added 13. Mills,
Claire Leynse and
Maddie Kitowski each had two service aces, accounting for half of the Green Knights' 12.
Andrianna Volz totaled 16 digs, followed by 15 from
Kara Sowinski, 13 by
Lauren Borchardt and 10 by Mills.
Against Chicago, the Green Knights trailed 16-15 in Set 1 before the Maroons took it home on a 9-3 run. In Set 2, St. Norbert rallied from a 20-18 deficit with a 7-3 run, getting set point on a Szews kill. Chicago never trailed in Set 3. The fourth set featured 10 ties and four lead changes. The set was tied 17-17 before Chicago took a 21-17 lead. The Green Knights got back to within 22-21 but Chicago closed out the win.
St. Norbert hit .122 against the Maroons, with 42 kills and 24 errors in 148 attempts. Maleigha Kovaleske had 10 kills. Colburn had 22 assists.
Sowinski finished 14 digs, Kovaleske had 11 and
Casey Vaughan 10. Kovalaske had four blocks, while Szews had three.
