DE PERE - St. Norbert College opened its own Chick-fil-A Invitational with a solid 3-1 win over Bethel University on the first night of the tournament at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights (3-3) topped the Royals 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-23. St. Norbert will face Carroll University and UW-Platteville in its two Saturday matches.
Bethel went on 5-0 run in Set 1 to turn a 13-11 deficit into a 16-13 lead and never trailed the rest of the set. St. Norbert returned the favor in Set 2 when it trailed 13-11 and 20-18 before going on a 5-0 run late to take a 23-20 lead on a pair of
Lauren Borchardt kills and a pair of Bethel attacking errors. In Set 3, St. Norbert led 19-12 before Bethel went on a 7-1 run to get to within 20-19, but the Green Knights reeled off four straight points to take a 24-19 lead and control of the set. St. Norbert trailed 4-1 early in Set 4and never gained the lead until turning a 16-14 deficit into a 20-16 lead. The Green Knights led 23-19 and 24-21 before Bethel got to within 24-23, but a booming kill by
Rylie Gregg clinched the match for the host.
St. Norbert hit .164 for the match, with 57 kills against 28 errors in 177 swings.
Brooke Clement had 14 kills,
Alyssa Mills 13 and Gregg 12.
Ellie Hartson had 24 assists and
Heidi Colburn added 20. Clement and Borchardt had three service aces apiece.
Erin Eggers compiled 38 digs, while Gregg had 13 and Borchardt 12. Gregg and
Molly Rader had three blocks each.
Bethel hit .165 with 49 kills and 19 errors in 182 attempts. Dani Friedges had a match-high 19 kills.
