DE PERE - St. Norbert College took the lead in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Slaats Cup Playoffs quarterfinal series with a 7-1 win over Marian University at Resch Olympic Pavilion.
The Green Knights (18-5-2) need just a tie in Saturday's second game to advance to the Slaats Cup Final Four. Marian (9-16-1) would need to win Game 2 and then a 20-minute mini-game to follow to win the series.
St. Norbert took a 1-0 lead in the first period when
Gabby Holtz scored at the 18:04 mark.
The Green Knights boosted their lead early in the second period when they scored a pair of power-play goals.
Courtnie Hogan scored at 6:51, while Bailey Brunnhoelzel found twine at 8:00. The uprising continued when
Kelsey Ross scored at 11:56, while
Lexi Bonfe added a goal at 14:31 for what would turn into a 5-0 lead at second intermission.
St. Norbert pulled ahead 6-0 when
Morgan Olson scored 41 seconds into the third period. Marian scored its only goal when Brynn Weaver scored at 1:14. Brunnhoelzel scored her second marker of the game at 9:02 to close out the scoring.
Holtz had three assists to finish with a four-point game. Brunnhoelzel scored two goals and an assist for a three-point game. Olson added an assist for as two-point game, while
Margaret Wohlleber had two assists for two points.
St. Norbert outshot Marian 32-6.
Brynn Waisman made five saves for the Green Knights. Kayla Kolpitcke made 17 stops and Abby Edstrom eight saves for the Sabres.
St. Norbert was 2-for-5 on the power play and Marian was 0-for-3.
