OSHKOSH - St. Norbert College sprinted out to a 15-point halftime lead and held on for a 59-57 non-conference win over UW-Oshkosh in a spirited non-conference game at Kolf Sports Center.
St. Norbert held a 59-55 lead with just over a minute left when a tip dunk by
Jamison Nickolai that would have given the Green Knights a six-point lead was waved off on a loose-ball foul on the rebound. Oshkosh converted both free throws to cut the deficit to 59-57. The Green Knights would miss a chance to make it a two-possession game inside 30 seconds and the Titans then missed a potential game-tying shot with six seconds left. But St. Norbert was whistled for an offensive foul under the Oshkosh goal with four seconds left.
Oshkosh inbounded from its own baseline and got the ball at the top of the key to Reed Gunnick, whose runner to the rim was just short as time expired.
St. Norbert led virtually the entire game, its only deficit coming at 9-8 just over five minutes into the game. Consecutive 3-pointers by
Alex Georgakas and
Aidan Harrington pushed St. Norbert ahead by five. Oshkosh whittled the deficit down to 19-17 with 9:17 left in the half before St. Norbert held the Titans without a field goal for the next 7 minutes 29 seconds, going on a 12-2 run. A Georgakas 3 put the Green Knights ahead 26-17 at the 6-minute mark, and back-to-back hoops by
Evan Glaser pushed St. Norbert ahead 30-19 with 3:01 left. Glaser's basket just before halftime gave the Green Knights a 38-23 lead.
Oshkosh would cut its deficit to 45-34 with 12:58 left, but a 3-pointer by
Brandt Wilson and a
Carter Gebler jumper gave the Green Knights a 50-34 lead with 12:01 to go. The Titans would go on an 11-0 run over the next 3:50 to get to within 50-45 before a Gebler layup stopped the bleeding. Oshkosh got the margin down to two at 57-55 with 2:48 left, but a Gebler layup with 2:09 to go made it 59-55 and set up the game's tense final moments.
St. Norbert shot 38.2 percent (21-for-55) from the floor but was 9-for-17 (52.9 percent) from beyond the arc and held a 36-30 rebounding margin. Gebler posted a team-high 17 points, while Glaser added 13 points and Harrington 11 points. Nickolai had 11 rebounds along with six points.
Oshkosh shot 37.3 percent (19-for-51) from the floor and was 8-for-25 (32 percent) from distance. Gunnink and Carter Thomas led the Titans with 12 points apiece.
