WAUWATOSA - St. Norbert College couldn't hold a fourth-quarter lead and gave up two late touchdowns as Monmouth College escaped with a 21-14 win over the Green Knights in the Cousins Subs Lakefront Bowl at Raabe Stadium.
The Green Knights (7-4) held a 14-7 lead going to the fourth quarter and stopped Monmouth on downs near midfield early in the frame. The Green Knights drove to Monmouth 19 and had a second-and-2 turn into a fourth-and-8 after a loss and penalty and an interception in the end zone stopped the drive. Both teams traded possessions until Monmouth took over at its own 3-yard line with 5:18 left.
Monmouth completed a 51-yard pass from Carter Boyer to Nate Thornton to get out of the hole and advanced to a fourth-and-2 at the St. Norbert 20. Boyer then got loose on the play for a 20-yard touchdown to tie the game with 2:50 left. St. Norbert got the ball back and got to its own 34 but lost the ball on a strip sack, with Monmouth recovering at the Green Knights' 28. Three plays later Boyer hit Thornton on a 17-yard touchdown with 34 seconds remaining.
St. Norbert got the first half's lone points when
Peyton Lyon's quarterback sneak with 2:05 left in the second quarter capped off a long drive for a 7-0 lead.
The Green Knights then pulled ahead 14-0 on their first possession of the third quarter when
Peyton Lyon hit
Tommy Hoeft from eight yards out. The Scots answered after a long pass set up Monmouth deep in St. Norbert territory, with Boyer scoring on a keeper with 7:56 left in the third quarter to cut it to 14-7.
Monmouth outgained St. Norbert 329-253 in total offense.
Owen Kudick finished with 127 rushing yards on 18 attempts to lead the Green Knights.
Boyer completed 14 of 27 passes for 257 yards for Monmouth, which had just 72 rushing yards on 34 attempts.
Sam Barnett and
Justin Benoit each had seven tackles to lead St. Norbert, while
Kyle Santos had six stops and two tackles-for-loss.
