STEVENS POINT - St. Norbert College couldn't overcome icy shooting in the second quarter and dropped a 59-54 outcome to UW-Stevens Point on the first night of the UW-Stevens Point Tournament at Berg Gym.
The Green Knights connected on just 2 of 15 (13.3 percent) of their field-goal attempts in the second quarter to fall behind 31-18 at halftime in their season opener.
St. Norbert trailed by 14 on two occasions in the third quarter, the last at 36-22 with 8:17 left in the period. The Green Knights stormed back with a 12-1 run over the next 5:12 to get to within 37-34 before settling on a 42-38 deficit at the end of the period.
Taylor Thiry's hoop on the first possession of the fourth quarter got the Green Knights to within 42-40, but the Pointers would go back up seven at 49-42 with 7:26 left. St. Norbert would get to within one at 52-51 with 3:06 to go on a
Kaya Stropus layup and again at 54-53 with 1:39 left on a Thiry layup, but the Pointers responded with a basket at 1:12 by Kelly McIntyre for a 56-53 lead. The Green Knights split a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left and Stevens Point again scored after moving to the frontcourt to seal the win.
The Green Knights trailed early at 11-3 before getting to within 17-13 after the first quarter. St. Norbert then went scoreless from the field for the first eight minutes of the second quarter and fell behind 31-14 before getting baskets from Thiry and
Chloe Gruszynski to trail 31-18 at the break.
St. Norbert finished the game 21-for-54 (38.9 percent) from the floor and was 1-for-10 (10 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. The Green Knights were 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) at the free throw line. Thiry led the Green Knights with 16 points, while
Rose Hahn and
Emma Morrisey had nine points apiece.
Stevens Point shot 33.8 percent (22-for-65) from the floor and was 5-for-27 (18.5 percent) from distance. Courtney Krueger led the Pointers with 13 points, while Gabby Gawlitta added 10 points.
