DE PERE - St. Norbert College went on a decisive 12-0 run just past the midway point of the second half and went on to post a 74-64 win over Edgewood College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights were nursing a 50-49 lead when
Evan Glaser's basket with 9:50 remaining boosted St. Norbert's lead to three. Glaser then converted a conventional three-point play at the 8:41 mark, followed by a
Carter Gebler layup with 8:08 left. Glaser then converted two free throws and
Garrett Grzesk drained a 3-pointer with 7:07 to go for a 62-49 lead. Edgewood would not get closer than nine points the rest fo the way.
St. Norbert trailed 6-4 in the early going before going on a 9-0 run fueled by five points from
Michael Payant and four from
Brandt Wilson to take a 13-6 lead. The Green Knights never trailed from that point on, although Edgewood cut the deficit to 21-20 with 8:27 left in the half. Grzesk's 3-pointer started a quick 8-2 run that pushed St. Norbert's lead to 29-22. The Green Knights opened up an 11-point lead late in the half before leading 39-31 at the break.
Glaser's two baskets to open the second half put the Green Knights up 43-31, but Edgewood chipped away on an 11-2 run over a 4:31 stretch to get to within 45-42. A Grzesk jumper, a
Jamison Nickolai free throw and a Nickolai layup put St. Norbert ahead 50-42 with 14 minutes left, but Edgewood came again with a 7-0 run to get to 50-49 with 10:14 remaining.
St. Norbert shot 44.1 percent from the floor, making 26 of 59 field-goal attempts. Grzesk had 17 points and seven rebounds, while Glaser had 17 points and five rebounds. Payant added 12 points and six rebounds. St. Norbert held a 37-32 rebounding advantage and had a 16-6 edge in second-chance points.
Edgewood converted 42.9 percent of its field goals, going 24-for-56 from the floor. Jake Schroeckenthaler led the Eagles with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Trey Traeder added 11 points.
