Green Knights Topple UW-Stevens Point

DE PERE - St. Norbert College earned its first win of the season with a physical 21-14 win over UW-Stevens Point in a non-conference game at Schneider Stadium.

The Green Knights built a 21-7 lead late in the third quarter and then had the football for almost 11 minutes in the fourth quarter to salt the game away.

Both teams played to a scoreless first quarter, with St. Norbert having the best scoring chance in the opening 15 minutes with a drive that reached the Stevens Point 24-yard line before being stopped on downs.

St. Norbert took over on its own 20 with 6:58 left in the second quarter and then converted two third downs to reach its own 49-yard line. Richie Gilles found Tommy Hoeft for a 37-yard gain to reach the Pointers' 14-yard line, and the two connected again on the next play for the only touchdown of the first half with 2:45 left in the half.

The Green Knights took the second-half kickoff and traversed 63 yards in 10 plays to score on a John Trinh 6-yard touchdown run at the 11:10 mark. Stevens Point responded with a long scoring drive of its own, going 75 yards in 13 plays to score on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Trey Schroeder to Devin Baldridge with 4:23 left in the third quarter.

St. Norbert went on the move again, going 65 yards in nine plays on a drive started by a 20-yard run by Delton Zuleger and a 30-yard pass from Gilles to Austin Miller. Gilles would score on fourth-and-goal from inches away with 44 seconds left in the quarter for a 21-7 lead.

Stevens Point reached the St. Norbert 16 on its next possession before the Green Knights got a defensive stop. The Green Knights then went 63 yards on 14 plays that melted 8:51 off the clock before being stopped on downs at the Stevens Point 21. The Pointers would move 79 yards in just 55 seconds on a 19-yard touchdown from Schroeder to Baldridge with 1:46 left. St. Norbert would recover the ensuing onside kick and run out the clock.

St. Norbert outgained Stevens Point 381-224 in total offense. Zuleger rushed 19 times for 88 yards, while Trinh rushed 19 times for 79 yards. Gilles completed 18 of 28 passes for 191 yards and one touchdown. Miller caught five passes for 62 yards and Ian Doell caught five passes for 35 yards.

Schroeder completed 12 of 22 passes for 145 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Brycen Cashin led Stevens Point on the ground with 29 yards on nine carries. Baldridge had 59 yards receiving and two touchdowns on three receptions.

Bryan Boockmeier led St. Norbert defensively eight tackles and one quarterback sack. Joe Jung added seven tackles, while Michael Creighton had six stops and 1 1/2 tackles for loss.
