ADRIAN, Mich. - St. Norbert College freshman forward
Lexi Bonfe's overtime goal sent the Green Knights to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Slaats Cup Playoffs Championship Game with a 3-2 win over Lake Forest College at Adrian College's Arrington Ice Arena.
The Green Knights (20-8), who set a school record for wins in a season with their 20th victory of the year, will face Aurora University at 1 p.m. Central on Saturday for the Slaats Cup title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament. St. Norbert will be playing in its first NCHA Playoffs title game since 2016.
Bonfe scored when she finished a rebound past a prone Lake Forest goaltender Hannah Turnage at the 6:17 mark of overtime. It was the second goal of the season for Bonfe, who joined the team mid-season.
St. Norbert trailed 1-0 after one period after the Foresters' Zoey Whittington scored at 12:25 of the first period. The Green Knights tied the game at 15:04 of the second period, when
Jordan Moore scored her ninth goal of the season with a power-play marker. The score would remained tied 1-1 at second intermission.
The Green Knights jumped ahead 2-1 just 14 seconds into the third period when
Kennedy Kiecker scored her first career goal, with the senior defenseman playing in her 80th career game. Lake Forest tied the game on a goal by Marissa Gebauer with exactly nine minutes left in the third period.
For only the second time in school history, St. Norbert did not commit a penalty in the game. The Green Knights were 1-for-3 on the power play.
Bonfe had an assist for a two-point game, while
Ava Jaschke had two assists for two points.
St. Norbert outshot Lake Forest 30-28.
Brynn Waisman made 26 saves for the Green Knights, while Turnage made 27 stops for the Foresters.
