MINNEAPOLIS - St. Norbert College was locked in a hard-fought battle with Augsburg University in a NCAA Division III Tournament national quarterfinal, but the Auggies scored three goals in the final six minutes to claim a 4-1 win at Augsburg Ice Arena.
The Green Knights (24-7) saw their season come to an end, while the Auggies (25-4) advance to the Division III Frozen Four next weekend in Lake Placid, N.Y. St. Norbert was playing in its 20th NCAA Division III Tournament, all since the 1997 season.
St. Norbert and Augsburg were tied 1-1 until the Green Knights were whistled for a hooking penalty at the 13:16 mark of the third period. The Auggies cashed in on their only power-play opportunity of the game when Austin Dollimer scored at 14:01 and a 2-1 lead.
The Auggies picked up an insurance goal when Erik Palmqvist scored at 17:53, and Austin Martinsen effectively decided the outcome with an empty-net goal at 18:57. Augsburg held a commanding 13-3 shots-on-goal advantage in the third period.
St. Norbert had a strong first period, outshooting the Auggies 11-5 in the opening 20 minutes.
Tim Nicksic gave the Green Knights a 1-0 lead when he scored at 19:47 of the period off an assist from
Adam Stacho.
The Green Knights also had a solid second period, but the Auggies were able to tie the game on a Jared Blackowiak goal at 4:34. That goal would hold up in a 1-1 tie until the Auggies pulled away late in the game, as St. Norbert did not convert on a power-play opportunity late in the second period.
Augsburg ended up outshooting St. Norbert 26-23.
Colby Entz made 22 saves for the Green Knights, while Samuel Vyletelka made 22 stops for the Auggies.
The Green Knights were 0-for-3 on the power play, while Augsburg was a crucial 1-for-1.
