MILWAUKEE - St. Norbert College earned a share of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference championship with a 74-49 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering at Hotchkin Arena.
The Green Knights (15-9, 11-6 NACC) shared the title with Concordia University Chicago and Concordia University Wisconsin, all posting 11-6 league marks. Concordia Chicago earned the No. 1 seeding in the NACC Tournament, while Concordia Wisconsin will be the No. 2 seeding. St. Norbert is the No. 3 seeding. All three tri-champions will receive a bye in the first round of the NACC Tournament. The Green Knights will open conference tournament play against the Wisconsin Lutheran College/MSOE winner in a quarterfinal round game at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mulva Sports Center.
The regular-season championship is St. Norbert's 10th in the last 13 years, including a 2020-21 season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This season is the Green Knights' first in the NACC after 37 years in the Midwest Conference. The victory was also St. Norbert coach
Gary Grzesk's 289th win at the helm of the Green Knights, moving him past Romie Kosnar's 288 from 1959 to 1982 for the most coaching wins for men's basketball at the school.
St. Norbert trailed 2-0 but never trailed again after
Garrett Grzesk canned a 3-pointer two possessions later. The Green Knights held an 11-8 lead with 14:44 left in the first half before going on a 9-0 run to take control.
Jacob Bolwerk connected on a 3-pointer and followed with a layup.
Kyle Krueger and
Carter Gebler then followed with layups for a 20-8 edge with 12:02 left.
St. Norbert led 26-17 with 4:53 left in the half, but things escalated quickly as the Green Knights went on a 12-0 run to see their lead rupture into a 21-point bulge.
Carson Talbert and Krueger drained jump shots, followed by a pair of
Jack Pettit free throws. Krueger and Talbert followed again with field goals and Bolwerk finished the run with two free throws for a 38-17 lead with 1:17 left before halftime. The Green Knights led 40-22 at intermission.
The Green Knights never led by less than 19 points in the second half and led by as many as 28 points on three different occassions.
St. Norbert shot a lusty 55.8 percent (29-for-52) from the floor and outrebounded the Raiders 41-28. Bolwerk had 16 points, while
Parker Lawrence added 13 points. Grzesk had 12 points and
Evan Glaser 10 for the Green Knights.
MSOE shot 25.4 percent (16-for-63) from the floor. Max Beuthin came off the bench to lead the Raiders with eight points.
