RIVER FOREST, Ill. - St. Norbert College held Concordia University Chicago to just over 25 percent shooting and captured a 54-38 win in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Geiseman Gymnasium.
The Green Knights (16-7, 13-3 NACC) moved into sole possession of second place in the NACC with one game remaining.
St. Norbert trailed for most of the first quarter, including by seven points at 13-6 before
Jessica Boerner's basket brought the Green Knights to within 13-8 at the end of the period. The Cougars' Jaylene Wade canned a 3-pointer to open the second quarter to put Concordia up 16-8, but St. Norbert would hold the Cougars scoreless the rest of the period by finishing on a 17-0 run.
Boerner connected on consecutive baskets to give St. Norbert a 17-16 lead, while
Chloe Gruszynski's two baskets were sandwiched around an
Emma Morrisey hoop for a 23-16 lead.
Madison Herdina then scored just before halftime to give St. Norbert a 25-16 lead.
Concordia got to within 31-24 midway through the third quarter before a quick 6-0 spurt by St. Norbert open the lead to 13.
Natalie Cerrato splashed a 3-pointer and Herdina converted 3 of 4 free-throw attempts for a 37-24 lead with 2:38 left in the quarter. St. Norbert led 41-28 at the end of three periods.
The Cougars cut the lead down to seven again at 41-34 with 8:11 remaining, but St. Norbert salted the game away with a 9-0 run.
Kaycee Gierczak, Herdina, a Cerrato 3 and a another Gierczak basket accounted for the scoring during the run.
St. Norbert made 22 of 52 field-goal attempts (42.3 percent) and outrebounded the Cougars 39-30. Boerner led the Green Knights with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Herdina added 11 points.
Concordia shot 25.5 percent (14-for-55) from the floor, including 1-for-14 (7.1 percent) in the decisive second quarter. Wade led the Cougars with nine points.
