DE PERE - For the second time in the last five games, St. Norbert College rallied from a three-goal deficit to claim a win, this time a 5-3 victory over Trine University in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at Cornerstone Community Center.
St. Norbert (17-3, 13-0 NCHA), ranked No. 5 in the USCHO.com Division III Poll, also tied a school record for consecutive wins with 16. The skein matches two previous streaks set in 2008 and 2014.
The Green Knights, who trailed Lake Forest College 6-3 in the third period of a 7-6 overtime win on Jan. 14, found themselves on the short end of a 3-0 deficit after one period. Brett Tierney scored just 62 seconds into the game for Trine, and Matt Bielinski followed at 7:13. Drew Welsch then scored at 17:47 for the three-goal lead for the Thunder. St. Norbert outshot Trine 15-5 in the period.
St. Norbert got back into the game early in the second period when
Peyton Frantti took advantage of a Trine defensive zone turnover and scored at 1:35.
Peter Bates then took a puck off the near wall and beat Trine goaltender Shane Brancato at 6:34 to bring St. Norbert to within 3-2, where the score would stand at second intermission.
Frantti scored again, going bar down off another defensive-zone turnover, to bring St. Norbert even at 3-3. The Green Knights registered their lone power-play goal of the game when Bates scored off the faceoff to open the power play at 11:24.
Liam Fraser's wraparound chance gave St. Norbert an insurance goal with 1:17 remaining.
Bates improved his goal total to 20, registering that mark in 20 games. Bates and Frantti both had two goals and two assists for four points. Fraser's goal was his 14th of the season, while Frantti now has 11.
St. Norbert doubled up Trine in shots at 36-18.
Johnny Roberts made 15 saves for St. Norbert, while Brancato made 31 saves for the Thunder.
The Green Knights were 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Thunder was 0-for-5.
