
TORONTO - St. Norbert College hockey alumnus Spencer Carbery has been named an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Carbery, a 2006 graduate, skated three years with the Green Knights after transferring from the University of Alaska-Anchorage. In 87 career games with St. Norbert, Carbery scored 55 goals and 45 assists for 100 points. He was named a first-team AHCA All-America selection in 2004 and was a first-team All-America choice by U.S. College Hockey Online in 2005. St. Norbert finished as the NCAA Division III runner-up in 2004 and 2006. Carbery went on to play professionally for four seasons.
"Spencer possesses a great mind for the game along with the necessary work ethic, energy and communication skills we are looking for," Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said in a statement.
"My family and I are thrilled to be joining the Maple Leafs organization," Carbery said. "I can't wait to get started in doing everything I can to help this historic franchise."
Carbery spent the last three seasons with the Hershey Bears, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Washington Capitals. Carbery was named the AHL Coach of the Year this past season after leading the Bears to a 24-7-2 record. During his three years in Hershey, Carbery was 104-50-9-8.
Carbery served as an assistant coach with the AHL's Providence Bruins prior to taking the helm in Hershey. Prior to a one-year stint coaching major junior Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League, Carbery was the head coach and director of hockey operations for the South Carolina Stingrays, which was Hershey's ECHL affiliate. Carbery was the ECHL Coach of the Year in 2014. In eight seasons as a professional head coach, Carbery has never had a losing season.
