St. Norbert Opens With Setback to UW-Stevens Point

DE PERE - St. Norbert College opened its 2021-22 women's basketball campaign with a 67-49 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Connie Tilley Court at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.

The Green Knights shot 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from the floor in the first quarter but still found themselves trailing 24-19 after the opening 10 minutes of action. St. Norbert led 17-16 after a Jessica Boerner jumper with 1:57 left in the period before closed on an 8-2 run. The Green Knights would get to within five points on five different occasions in the second quarter before the Pointers settled on a 40-32 halftime lead.

St. Norbert trailed 42-34 with 7:40 led in the third quarter after a Boerner jumper, but the Pointers went on an 13-2 run to take a 55-36 advantage late in the third quarter. The Green Knights got to within 12 twice in the fourth quarter but would get no closer.

St. Norbert shot 39.2 percent (20-for-51) from the floor and was 3-for-16 (18.8 percent) from beyond the three-point line. Kaycee Gierczak led all scorers with 19 points and added seven rebounds. Boerner finished with 10 points. The Green Knights finished with just eight fouls.

Stevens Point shot 40.6 percent (28-for-69) from the floor and held a commanding 45-31 rebounding advantage, which led to a 15-1 edge in second-chance points. Gabby Gawlitta finished with a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Taylor Greenheck added 10 points. The Pointers had just seven turnovers.
