NOTRE DAME, Ind. - St. Norbert College wrapped up its two-game exhibition schedule with a 78-44 loss to the University of Notre Dame in front of a crowd of 5,231 at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.
The Green Knights fell behind 7-0 but countered with 3-pointers from
Michael Payant and
Ben Jelacic to get to within 10-6. St. Norbert trailed 12-8 with 13:03 left in the first half after a
Carter Gebler basket.
Jack Pettit's floating jumper with 12:10 left in the half brought St. Norbert to within 12-10, but the Fighting Irish would score the next eight points to take control.
St. Norbert trailed 23-14 on a
Garrett Grzesk putback off an offensive rebound with 7:38 left in the half, but Notre Dame would go on a 16-4 run over the next 3:44 to take a 39-18 edge. Notre Dame led 39-22 at halftime.
Carson Talbert's two free throws with 16:59 remaining brought St. Norbert to within 45-28 against the Atlantic Coast Conference foe, but Notre Dame went on a 14-0 run over the next 3:29 to take a 59-28 lead with 13:30 to go.
St. Norbert shot 32.1 percent (18-for-56) from the floor and was 2-for-15 (13.3 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Payant led St. Norbert with nine points, while Talbert added six points. The Green Knights were outrebounded 45-33 but committed just nine personal fouls.
Notre Dame shot 42 percent (29-for-69) from the floor and was 16-for-39 (41 percent) from distance. Paul Atkinson and Trey Wertz had 15 points apiece for the Fighting Irish.
