DE PERE - St. Norbert College gave unbeaten UW-Eau Claire all it could handle before falling 65-58 in a hard-fought and well-played non-conference game on Connie Tilley Court at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights (2-4) trailed by six early in the fourth quarter after Eau Claire (4-0) built a 48-42 lead with 8:17 to go. St. Norbert then went on a 10-0 run, fueled by 3-pointers from
Kaycee Gierczak and
Chloe Gruszynski.
Olivia DeCleene's hoop with 5:36 left put St. Norbert up 52-48 with 5:36 remaining. The Blugolds would respond quickly, canning 3-pointers from Tyra Boettcher and Jessie Ruden on the next two possessions for a 54-52 edge with 4:28 left.
Mary Cravillion knocked down a jumper with 3:24 to go to tie the game 54-54, but Ruden drained another triple at the 2:57 mark. Gierczak's layup with 2:03 left brought St. Norbert to within 57-56, but Boettcher cashed in again from distance for a 60-56 Eau Claire lead with 57 seconds left. The Blugolds made 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute to salt away the win.
Eau Claire led 20-13 after the first quarter and eventually led 32-21 with 4:46 left in the second quarter. The Blugolds led 34-24 with 3:25 to go before halftime before St. Norbert went on an 8-1 run, getting a basket from DeCleene and a pair of 3-pointers from
Natalie Cerrato to close to within 35-32 at intermission.
St. Norbert got to within two points three times in the third quarter before Eau Claire got a little bit of breathing room, but St. Norbert scored the last four points of the period on baskets by
Emma Morrisey and
Jessica Boerner to trail 46-42 after the third period.
St. Norbert shot 38.3 percent (23-for-60) from the floor and committed just eight turnovers. Boerner led St. Norbert with 12 points, while DeCleene added 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Gierczak chipped in with nine points.
Eau Claire shot 42.3 percent (22-for-52) from the floor but drained 11 of 23 (47.8 percent) of its three-point field-goal attempts. Ruden paced the Blugolds with 26 points, including eight 3-pointers. Boettcher added 14 points and Courtney Crouch 10.
