DE PERE - St. Norbert College got its 2021-22 women's hockey season underway with a 4-1 loss to St. Mary's University in a non-conference game at Resch Olympic Pavilion.
The Green Knights will host the Cardinals in Game 2 of the series at 3 p.m. Saturday.
St. Mary's took the lead with a goal by Avrey Simonson at 8:37 of the first period. The Cardinals doubled their lead on a Jenna Kurkowski goal at 16:13 of the second period, and the visitors held that advantage into second intermission.
The Green Knights got on the board at 9:26 of the third period on a shorthanded marker by
Courtnie Hogan. St. Norbert couldn't draw even, and the Cardinals put the game away with a goal by Kurkowski at 16:39 and an empty-net marker by Anna Braun at 19:59.
St. Mary's outshot St. Norbert 26-22.
Evi Johnson made 22 saves for the Green Knights, while Ary Ziakas made 21 stops for St. Mary's.
St. Norbert was 0-for-1 on the power play, while St. Mary's was 0-for-4.
